Abstract
Malaysia has become an ageing nation in 2020 but the aged population remains low in the adoption of mobile technologies and services. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic marks the highlight of the effect of digital transformation for ageing population, especially the adoption of smartphones and its services are more crucial than ever. The study focused on female elderly, as an underrepresented group in STEMS and from a gender non-binary perspectives that address gender as a construction influenced by socio-cultural factors and power relationships that affect the usage, communication, and experiences with technological products. However, the local market of smartphones and mobile services for the ageing population and the incorporation of gender perspectives in design remain widely unexplored and potentially lucrative. The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship of female elderly with their use of smartphone and mobile services in everyday lives through the lens of the intersectionality approach. Intersectionality approach was used to deepen the explanation of age, gender, or combination effects of grouping variables to the findings of the study. This research employed a qualitative method. Case studies were conducted with nine elderly women in Malaysia, two pilots and seven main studies, by using multiple sources of data collection through semi-structured interviews, mobile walkthrough, and diary studies. Thematic analysis was used as an analysis technique in this study. The findings identified the key design factors that should be considered for a more inclusive use of mobile services for female elderly. The outcome of this research aimed to give seniors voices, particularly female elderly, and raise awareness about gender equality and inclusiveness in technology and mobile service development.
