Abstract
The choice of media and forms has an effect on the kind of memory that is created. Since the cultural evolution of mankind is founded on the history of media, the Medial Memory created not only affects an individual but also our cultural consciousness. However, the processes of modern media have accelerated and shifted the social processes of memory. As memory is not a static object but an active process and labour, this research aims to understand how media relates to memory. What role do the different media play in the externalisation of personal memories? What kind of mental space is created in mediation and remediation of personal memory? How do remediation and intermediality shape the process of remembering and redefine personal memories? Through examining the history of media, we understand the evolution of social and cultural memory. Using Media as a site of Memory, I externalise personal memory in multiple media to explore the effect of media in the kind of memory created. From traditional media of drawing and painting, I further expand the process of remembering through remediation in new media of digital art, GIFs, animation, film and visual effects compositing. The final result aims to show how intermediality affects the process of remembering in transforming and redefining personal memory. With the future developments into the metaverse and VR, AR and AI, human’s monopoly in memory will be challenged.
