Abstract

As a form of social commentary, editorial cartoons hold a unique commentary position of media discourse used to express opinions, and bring up valuable arguments. Visual rhetoric’s of metaphor, symbolism, and exaggeration are used to communicate the cartoonists’ message and creativity in portraying issues of public interest. Most studies in the academic field have restricted their scope to political or editorial cartoons, to such an extent that many scholars refer to them almost as a synonym of the cartoon genre. Therefore, the subject of cartoon genre tends to concentrate on one form of cartoon while ignoring others. The study seeks to interpret these cartoons into categories in which Malaysian netizens can abstract, classify, and decode the symbols, personifications and other stylistic devices frequently used by cartoonists. Using genre discursive research as a starting point, this study seeks to differentiate cartoon subgenres based on their rhetorical characteristics. This is particularly relevant as stated by Forceville (2002, 2006) that genre is a crucial framing device governing interpretation. The characterization of subgenres in a monotonous variety provided by the study on cartoons will help minds of the both academics and cartoonist in decoding and understanding the rhetoric devices of cartoons through the various genres. It therefore creates an awareness thus providing mechanics of the mapping of rhetorical devices as an effective tool to editorial cartoon readers.
