Abstract

Background - Homelessness has long been acknowledged as a global issue affecting the poorest individuals in both developed and developing countries. Homelessness affects thousands of people in Malaysia, regardless of their age group, race, education, professions, and geographical regions. All aspects of the human experience are significantly influenced by human needs that promote well-being. Basic needs such as food, water, healthcare, education, and even shelters have often been difficult to be met. As per researchers, well-being is predicated on basic needs being met. Purpose - This research aims to investigate the factors influencing the well-being of the homeless and the moderating role of government assistance. Methodology - This research will employ a quantitative technique with a total of 138 respondents will be chosen for the survey based on the G*Power. Non-probability sampling will be employed and the survey questionnaires will be distributed to the homeless people residing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. PLS-SEM is used to conduct survey data analysis. Findings - According to the findings, the relationship between all the independent variables (health, quality of life, social relationships, and knowledge and skills) and the dependent variable (well-being of the homeless) is statistically significant (p-value ≤ 0.05). The moderating effect of government role between knowledge and skills on the well-being of the homeless is also significant with a p-value of 0.003. All of the outer loadings are accepted, and the model of measurement can provide an accurate model measurement. Based on the two-way interaction using Jeremy Dawson’s moderation graph, the government’s role strengthens the positive relationship between knowledge and skills and the wellbeing of the homeless. Research limitations - The limitation is the lack of previous studies on this research topic. Originality/value - The findings will help in the better formulation of programmes and policies that are needed to protect the needs, to be able to improve and promote the well-being of the homeless person and eliminate homelessness issues in the country. The scarcity of academic writing on the issue of homelessness particularly the well-being of homeless people, and no adequate definition or policies have led to this research.
