Abstract

Faceless (After Tam binti Che Lat)’ Mixed media on canvas, 6’ X 4’, 2018 is a tribute reference to a painting titled ‘the Detribalization of Tam binti Che Lat (DOT) by Ismail Zain (1930- 1991), one of the pioneers in Modern Malaysian Art. I was fascinated by DOT as it reminded me of the ideas of looking back to the traditional (Malay) roots to enhance the identity of modern Malaysia in the 1980s when I was an art student. Here, I intently leave the figure ‘faceless’ to somehow illustrate how we can possibly and easily lose our identity to today’s misinformation without a firm belief in ourselves and our own roots.
