Abstract

This paper reports the strain magnification effect of an off-axis coated single mode fiber (OA-SMF) as part of a Rayleigh Scattering based Distributed Pressure Sensor System. The strain is induced by hydrostatic pressure which can be measured by using the interrogator (Neubrex PR7300) based on Rayleigh backscattering frequency difference technique. The results indicate that the OA-SMF will improve the strain sensitivity by 15% depending on the coating structure, compared to a SMF. The OA-SMF fiber outperforms the SMF-28, indicating a sensitive optical fiber sensor for distributed pressure sensing.
