Abstract

The contribution of fresh graduates towards the high rate of youth unemployment are mainly caused by factors such as insufficient employability skills, hence this study aims to identify the extent of employability skills and initial signals impact on the recruitment decisions of employers towards fresh graduates. The aim of the study was achieved by integrating the model of Employability, Spence Model and Bailly Model. In order to overcome the unemployment issue, the labour market demand side – employers’ perceptions is important to be determined. Members of the MEF (Malaysian Employers Federation) were invited to participate in this study and were surveyed using a questionnaire to collect their opinions, as employers. A total of 133 collected responses were used in data analysis. The analysis employed for this study consists of the assessment of reflective and formative measurement models (first and second order constructs respectively), structural model, as well as mediation analysis (indirect effects). The findings of this study revealed that two out of three hypotheses were supported. Furthermore, the results from hypotheses testing revealed that both employability skills and initial signals were the primary factors that significantly impacted the recruitment decision of Malaysian employers towards fresh graduates with positive sign. As such, this finding provides valuable insight that the employment of fresh graduates is not merely about acquiring employability skills, but also the initial signals conveyed by fresh graduates to employers during their job applications. The existence of both employability skills and initial signals could increase the probability of fresh graduates in obtaining a positive recruitment decision from employers. It is anticipated that stakeholders such as fresh graduates, Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and employers will gain meaningful knowledge and insight from the findings of this research. The research questions developed from the problem statement were answered. Moreover, the findings of the study provide further information on how fresh graduates can improve in gaining employment. All in all, this study contributes by discussing the implications towards society both theoretically and practically by empirically testing the research framework.
