Abstract

When entering an international market, small and medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) need to take into consideration factors such as industry forces, their dynamic capabilities, possible competitive advantages, mode of entry and their overall approach in order to achieve a favorable performance. International SMEs encounter several problems including how to navigate the complexities of industry forces and develop the dynamic capabilities to achieve their performance goals. Focusing mainly on international SMEs, this study aims explore the aforementioned problem by examining competitive advantage as a mediator and mode of entry as a moderator for the relationship between industry forces, impact of sanctions, and dynamic capabilities, and international SME’s performance. Purpose –The findings of this study offer several contributions from a firm performance perspective. Firstly, while numerous studies on firm performance have focused on SMEs, and some have even investigated the impact of industry forces on SME performance, nevertheless, no specific studies in reference to the role of competitive advantage and mode of entry in the said relationship is available. Moreover, even though many studies exist on the impact of sanctions on economies of both sender and receiver nations, however, the current literature as it relates to the impact of sanction on international SMEs’ performance is non-existent. This study uncovers a new aspect of consideration which allows international SMEs to gain a more comprehensive knowledge on the industry forces, dynamic capabilities, impact of sanctions, mode of entry, and competitive advantage and their impact on performance.
