Abstract
Yap Sau Bin talks about the concept behind his installation work entitled “The Grand Phantom Narrates.” The piece suggests how institutional power - whether cultural, as with the museum, or political, as with the prime ministership - shapes and influences individual subjectivity. It was completed in 2004 and was a finalist in the Young Contemporaries competition organized by the National Art Gallery. The work is featured in “The Body Politic and the Body,” which was ILHAM’s most recent exhibition that was held in collaboration with the Singapore Art Museum.
