Abstract

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a high resolution imaging system commonly used in the microwave remote sensing. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a popular SAR platform for civilian as well as military applications. When operated on an UAV, platform's motion error may cause severe distortions to the quality of the SAR images. Thus, motion sensing and compensation become the key challenges in UAV-based SAR system. In order to obtain a high resolution SAR image, high accuracy UAV motion sensing is essential. This thesis reports on the design and development of a six degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) motion sensing system for UAV-based SAR. The proposed system employs a 6-DOF Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a high sampling rates Global Positioning System (GPS) for accurate motion sensing.
