Abstract

This study investigates the impact of W6+ and V5+ doping on optimizing the structural and ionic conductivity of bismuth tantalates. Phase-pure samples were successfully synthesized at 900°C and 24–48 hours. The increased polarizing power of W6+ and V5+ cations, relative to Ta5+, led to a weakening of Bi-O bonding and a subsequent expansion of the unit cell from 5.4477 (40) Å to 5.4668(1) Å upon chemical doping. No significant variation in grain size, which ranged from 0.20 to 3.41 µm, was observed among the samples and all samples demonstrated a density exceeding 85%. A thermally stable type II Bi2O3 phase was consistently observed across the studied temperature range of 50–1000°C. An enhancement in ionic conductivity was noted in all doped samples, with W-doped samples generally exhibiting better performance. The larger unit cell, stable type II Bi2O3 phase and interstitial oxygen were key contributors to the substantial improvement observed in the W-doped samples, particularly within the higher temperature range of 650 to 700°C. Bi3Ta0.8W0.2O7.10 demonstrated the highest conductivity value, reaching 0.0138 S cm−1 at 700°C, positioning it as a promising candidate for oxide ion conductor applications, such as ion-conducting solid electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).
