Abstract

Digital twins have emerged as a transformative paradigm for real-time representation, management, and integration of complex physical systems. Traditional uncertainty classification may be insufficient to address the complexities of uncertainty in digital twin ecosystems. A new class is proposed, referred to as ontological uncertainty, which comprises a novel category arising from the dynamic reconfiguration of the frame of discernment in evolving digital twin ecosystems. A random set representation and an update mechanism are introduced to model this category, enabling both frame reconfiguration and focused exploitation of the current frame. Key systemic drivers shaping the interaction, propagation, and amplification of uncertainties in digital twin ecosystems are determined, with an illustration using an autonomous electric vehicle (AEV) example. A six-layer pyramid framework, constructed from hybrid, adaptive, probabilistic, collaborative, quantum and human-in-the-loop digital twins, is introduced to mitigate uncertainty. A case study is presented using real data on a battery system that represents an important component in an AEV. Significant computational advancements remain necessary to address the challenges of navigating uncertainty in dynamic and complex digital twin ecosystems.
