Disaster-Aware IoT Connectivity Using FANET Routing Protocol _ Springer Nature Link.pdf - Published Version Restricted to Repository staff only Download (750kB) |
Abstract
The ad hoc nature of Flying Ad Hoc Networks (FANETs) allows Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to have connectivity in environments that are inaccessible to traditional fixed infrastructure; this includes, but is not limited to, disaster response, surveillance, and IoT-based applications. With FANETs, there will be a continuous need for routing protocols in order to establish and maintain communication between UAVs as the topological structure of a FANET is constantly changing due to link instability and resource constraints. In this study, we will evaluate the performance of eight routing protocols (AODV, OLSR, DYMO, PM (SM, DM), GPSR, TORA, and DSDV) utilizing OMNeT++ in both the Random Waypoint and Static mobility models. We will consider three metrics through which to evaluate the performance of these routing protocols: throughput, packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay. Additionally, this study will demonstrate how the routing strategies assessed could contribute to improving disaster response by enabling reliable UAV-to-IoT communication for victim location determination, situational awareness and emergency coordination. Furthermore, this study will provide insight into the advantages and disadvantages of each routing strategy so that the most suitable protocol may be chosen when deploying a FANET with IoT capabilities.
