Energy consumption was observed to increase yearly because of several reasons, such as high energy demand, high population growth and human activities. Development of silicon-based solar cells has been carried out for the past few decades due to high power conversion efficiency. However, several disadvantages could be seen, including high module cost, high production cost and very complicated processes. Low-cost dye-sensitized solar cells have been studied by many researchers. The main components are such as redox electrolytes (solid-state, liquid, and organic electrolytes), semiconductor films, counter electrodes, mesoporous titanium oxide layers, conducting substrate and dye- sensitizers (natural and synthetic dyes). Nowadays, there are several groups that have investigated the different components of dye-sensitized solar cells. In addition, specific experimental conditions have been designed to improve the power conversion efficiency of solar cells. In this work, the properties of the dye-sensitized solar cells were studied using different tools such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The obtained results will be discussed briefly also.
