Abstract

Educators increasingly use social media as a key tool in the learning process. This study examines the impact of social media technologies on knowledge sharing, learning, and academic performance in higher education institutions (HEIs). This study focuses on Malaysian public universities and seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how technology shapes education. Data were collected using an online questionnaire distributed through social media, enabling rapid and widespread dissemination and yielding 411 responses from students. Specifically, the study combines social capital theory to examine its influence on knowledge sharing while leveraging the concept of student engagement to explore its role in knowledge acquisition. In addition, both knowledge sharing and knowledge acquisition are jointly associated with perceived academic performance, providing a more comprehensive understanding of how social media contributes to student outcomes. This integrated framework has not been widely applied in Malaysian higher education, thereby offering a novel contribution to both theory and practice. The originality of this study lies in its integration of multiple theoretical perspectives to explain students’ perceptions of their academic performance.
