Abstract

This study analyses the convergence of energy intensity of well-being in 31 OECD countries over the period 1965-2022. For the sake of robustness, the analysis uses three well-being indicators including life expectancy, infant survival rates, and under-five survival rates. Using a club convergence method, we find no evidence for convergence of energy intensity of well-being among the countries in the panel for any of the three indicators. When we use the life expectancy series as an indicator of well-being, we find evidence for only four convergence clubs of energy intensity of well-being. Furthermore, we observe the divergence of energy intensity of well-being among most OECD countries, when using infant survival rates and under-five survival rates as indicators of well-being. The results suggest that country-specific policies are needed to reduce energy intensity of well-being in the OECD countries. The policy implications arising from the results, which are consistent with the seventh Sustainable Development Goal or SDG 7, are discussed in the manuscript.
