Abstract
This paper presents performance analysis and comparison of active and passive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-aided wireless systems in cellular system with co-channel interferers under realistic channel conditions. A simple and efficient analytical framework based on the Moment Generating Function (MGF) approach is developed to evaluate the downlink ergodic capacity and energy efficiency (EE), considering Nakagami-m fading, path loss, and co-channel interference (CCI) from neighbouring base stations. In the passive RIS configuration, the reflected signals are phase-shifted without amplification, which limits the received signal strength under severe path loss conditions. In contrast, the active RIS employs signal amplification at each element, enhancing the received power but introducing additional amplifier noise and increased circuit power consumption. Closed-form expressions for both ergodic capacity and EE are derived and validated against Monte Carlo simulations, showing a close match with theoretical predictions. The results reveal that the active RIS-aided system consistently outperforms the passive counterpart in terms of capacity and EE across various scenarios, such as the number of RIS elements, path loss exponent, amplifier gain, and interference probability, despite incurring higher power consumption.
