Abstract
This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in millimetrewave and microwave Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology. SIW has appeared as a promising platform for the efficient design of Radio Frequency (RF) circuits and components, particularly at higher frequencies where traditional planar technologies, such as microstrip, face significant limitations due to fabrication challenges and increased propagation losses. SIW technology offers a compelling solution by enabling low-loss transmission, compact form factors, and wideband performance, making it well-suited for microwave and millimetre-wave applications. This study systematically examines the fundamental principles and design considerations of SIW structures, with a focus on their application in antennas and beamforming networks. Through an extensive literature review, the paper analyses the key parameters influencing antenna performance—such as gain, bandwidth, and physical dimensions—highlighting the critical role of metal via configurations in optimizing these metrics. The findings underscore the potential of SIWbased designs in advancing high-frequency communication systems, and contribute valuable insights toward the development of next-generation SIW components.
