Abstract

In the context of globalization, the influx of international students into China necessitates a deeper understanding of their intercultural adaptability. This study investigates the predictors of Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) and acculturation among international students at a public university in Sichuan, China. The primary objective is to examine the relationships between ICC and acculturation that concentrated on six predictors: ATOC, MTEIIC, ethnocentrism, sensation seeking, empathy, and sensitivity. Using a quantitative research design, this study collected data through a questionnaire from 363 international students from 22 countries in the university. Results indicate significant positive correlations between ATOC, MTEIIC, sensation seeking, empathy, sensitivity, and acculturation. However, the study found ethnocentrism showed a significant negative correlation with acculturation. Findings from a linear regression analysis revealed that ATOC and empathy were the strongest predictors of acculturation, significantly enhancing students' ability to adapt to the new cultural environment. In conclusion, this research contributes to the understanding of ICC and acculturation by identifying specific predictors and their relationships. It offers valuable insights for educational institutions to develop strategies that support international students' adaptation and integration, thereby fostering a diverse and inclusive campus environment. By addressing these factors, universities can better support their international student populations, ultimately enhancing their academic success and overall experience in a foreign cultural setting.
