Abstract

The prevalence of low saving rates underscores a persistent problem that raises serious concerns about national financial security, particularly among lowincome earners. Within this broader context, women face disproportionate financial instability because they are disproportionately vulnerable to financial shock and often exhibit lower level of savings, making them an essential focus of this study. The vulnerability stems from various factors including lower average income, higher likelihood of part-time or precarious employment and caregiving responsibilities. Given the challenges, there is a pressing need to understand factors influencing women’s financial buffer saving behavior in Malaysia. Hence, the objectives of this study are to explore the extent to which women save for financial buffers, to examine the influence of women’s attitude, social norms, and perceived behavioral control towards financial buffer saving intentions and to examine whether perceived financial shocks strengthen or weaken the influence of women's attitude towards savings, social norms, and perceived behavioral control on their intention to save for financial buffers. To achieve these objectives survey questionnaire is distributed to the respondents by employing convenience sampling, a non-probability approach to select participants based on their accessibility and willingness to participate. The findings of this study highlight the significance of attitude and perceived behavioral control on women’s buffer saving intentions. Additionally, this study reveals that perceived financial shock strengthen the relationship between attitude and perceived behavioral control and buffer saving intentions. These factors play a crucial role in shaping financial behavior and understanding their implications can inform both policy and practice aimed at enhancing women’s financial security through financial buffer saving.
