Abstract
The electricity system’s environmental impact has become a cause for concern due to the recent increase in Global Warming Potential rates. Substations, which are widely distributed, are an integral part of the electricity system. Gas Insulated Substations (GIS) and Air Insulated Substations (AIS) are the two technologies used in substations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the environmental impact of these two technologies at medium voltage level using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The analysis focuses on four environmental indicators: Global Warming Potential, Damage to Human Health, Damage to Ecosystem, and Damage to Resources. The study found that the GIS substation has a slightly lower environmental impact than the AIS substation by 45% on Global Warming Potential and Human Health indicators due to electricity losses. However, the GIS and AIS have almost the same impact on Damage to Ecosystem and Damage to Resources indicators
