Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the performance of TCP New Reno and Reno protocols on satellite networks. In the context of networks with high latency and packet loss, this study will explore issues related to the effectiveness of both protocols in managing data delivery. The methodology used includes simulations using Network Simulation 2 (NS2) to measure Quality of Service (QoS) parameters such as throughput, delay, and packet loss. The selection of this topic is based on the need to understand the performance of the TCP protocol in challenging situations, such as satellite networks. Results show that TCP New Reno marginally outperforms TCP Reno in throughput and packet loss efficiency, especially at moderate to high traffic loads while incurring only a slight increase in total delay. These findings suggest that New Reno is the more suitable baseline TCP variant for satellite environments where link quality fluctuates and retransmission efficiency is critical. Furthermore, the simulations were conducted under three different bandwidth scenarios, low, default, and high to represent varying satellite link capacities. The comparative results highlight how TCP Reno experiences noticeable degradation when traffic density rises, particularly in high loss conditions, while TCP New Reno is able to maintain more stable performance through its enhanced congestion control and partial acknowledgement mechanism. By providing a deeper understanding of the strengths and limitations of these two TCP variants, this research contributes insight that can support the development of more reliable satellite communications systems.
