Abstract

National health insurance plays a crucial role in safeguarding family well-being, promoting social equity, reducing out-of-pocket (OOP) healthcare expenditures, and enhancing individuals’ access to medical services. However, in Malaysia, a national health insurance scheme has yet to be implemented. Therefore, this study aims to examine the factors influencing consumers’ intention to adopt a national health insurance scheme. Additionally, it seeks to assess the level of adoption of such a scheme in Malaysia. The factors considered in this study include awareness, religiosity, relative advantage, attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control regarding the adoption of a national health insurance scheme. A quantitative research approach was employed, with a self-administered questionnaire distributed to 220 targeted respondents. The collected data was entered into SPSS and subsequently analysed using SmartPLS software. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for government agencies and businesses seeking to promote the adoption of a national health insurance scheme. Finally, the study’s implications are discussed to offer relevant recommendations for stakeholders involved in policy development and implementation.
