Abstract
Sensory ethnography entails a consideration of the sensorial experiences of being human in a world, as well as empathy for what may be required in response to difficult and/or morally reprehensible social and physical circumstances. In this article, we consider the long heritage of violence in South Africa, indicating both the morbid fascination with, as well as a long legacy of physical violence. We consider this legacy to be an abhorrent heritage that requires consideration in sensory criminology, for a deeper understanding of the residues of crime and ways in which they continue to affect victims, long after crime is committed. Attending to the sensory residues of violence can evoke a more profound human connection, allowing us to comprehend not just the facts of crime, but its enduring imprint on bodies, minds, and communities.
