Abstract
This study focuses on designing and implementing a Speed Limit Violation Alert System to enhance road safety through real-time monitoring and proactive alerts. The study addresses the safe speed element identified in the safe systems framework introduced by the Federal Highway Administration. The system dynamically obtained the speed limit in actual road environment and compares the value to the current vehicle speed. Open Street Map data and GPS technology are utilized to detect potentials of speed limit violations. When a violation is detected, drivers receive immediate visual alerts via an LED display, promoting awareness and encouraging safer driving behaviors. Based on the field testing in three routes, this study demonstrates functionality and reliability in detecting vehicle speed and comparing it with the speed limit. This eventually promotes safer driving practices and reduces the risk of speed-related accidents.
