Abstract

The world is experiencing a paradigm shift in ageing trends. An accessible and affordable transportation system underpins a healthy economic growth and physical life. However, due to the detriments of the declining physical and cognitive ability among the elderly, their risks associated with traffic crashes inevitably increase exponentially. The emergence of autonomous vehicle technology is propagated to have the potential to address the needs of the elderly and reduce other negative externalities brought by transportation mobility. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of autonomous vehicles (AVs) among the elderly in Malaysia. Building on the literature gaps, a study framework integrating the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with multidimensional trusts, perceived risks as well as technology anxiety was proposed. The serial mediating effects between the external variables and TAM model were demonstrated in this study and the direct relationships of the two dimensions of trusts, perceived risks, and technology anxiety with the acceptance were verified. The posited framework was tested using a face-to-face survey with 289 elderly people aged 55 years old and above in the Klang Valley based on purposive sampling. Structural Equation Modelling using SmartPLS software was employed to examine the direct and mediating effects of the hypotheses. Results showed that the mediating roles of perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude between trust in institutions and acceptance were not supported. On the other hand, the trust in performance had indirect effects on acceptance of AVs through perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude. The multidimensional perceived risks were found to not influence the acceptance of AVs. Moreover, the mediating role of attitude between technology anxiety and acceptance of AVs was established in this study. This pioneering research provided important insights on the factors influencing the acceptance in the field of AVs from the perspectives of the elderly in Malaysia. The findings would benefit the industry players in designing the most appropriate policies and strategies to ensure the smooth deployment of Level 3 AVs (vehicles that are able to perform independently but still require human intervention in the event of any incident) in the country from the elderly social segment perspective. In addition, this research also enriched the body of literature by demonstrating the rigorous application of TAM model integrating with multidimensional trusts, perceived risks, and technology anxiety in the context of acceptance of AVs among the elderly in Malaysia.
