Abstract
This paper introduces a novel method for measuring donor signals at telecommunication towers and other elevated locations using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with an advanced signal scanner. The UAV-based approach replaces conventional methods such as manual tower climbing or the use of heavy equipment. This efficient and cost-effective method significantly reduces time and operational risks. The integrated GPS-based location, automated flight controls and reliable signal measurement tools ensure accurate data collection while enhancing safety and operational efficiency. A real-world use case has demonstrated the effectiveness of this method in deploying an LTE repeater. In this case, the UAV-assisted signal scanner identified the optimal donor antenna azimuth of 75°, which achieved the best signal quality metrics with RSRP of -70 dBm, SNR of 16 dB and superior downlink and uplink throughput. The extended coverage area showed substantial improvements in signal quality and throughput, confirming the practical advantages of this innovative methodology. These results highlighted the potential of UAV technology to transform network deployment strategies and offer a reliable, safe and precise alternative to conventional methods.
