Abstract

Despite its disruptive nature, COVID-19 has unveiled the transformative potential of cutting-edge technologies, like the metaverse, in enhancing education to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Still, discussions on integrating the metaverse into education for sustainability within the higher education institutions (HEIs) remain sparse. This paper synthesizes existing literature to inform the use of metaverse in education for sustainability, focused on the implementation, through the lens of the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. A systematic literature review based on the PRISMA method was conducted, involving identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion steps. The Scopus database was used to source the relevant literature for this review. 24 out of 43 articles were included in the final analysis. The results were analyzed using a qualitative approach and categorized into key themes - learner engagement, sustainability literacy, behavioral changes, collaborative learning, cultural and contextual factors, skills development, use of theories, challenges and limitations. A structured representation of the findings was developed by incorporating literature on CoI and mapping them into a contextual framework. This pioneer review sets the trajectory for future research to empirically test the proposed contextual mapping for education for sustainability within the metaverse platforms. It also offers guiding principles for the HEIs, policymakers, and practitioners to advance sustainability initiatives within the evolving metaverse landscape.
