Abstract

Food security is a critical issue for Malaysia, necessitating the establishment of comprehensive food security laws. As the nation grapples with climate change, fluctuating global food prices, and increasing population demands, a robust legal framework is essential to ensure sustainable access to safe and nutritious food for all citizens. Current laws and policies often lack the necessary integration and enforcement mechanisms, leading to vulnerabilities in food supply chains and agricultural practices. The proposed food security law would address several key areas: enhancing local agricultural production, improving food distribution systems, and promoting responsible consumption practices. By establishing clear guidelines and responsibilities for all stakeholders—including government agencies, farmers, and private sector players—the law would facilitate a coordinated approach to food security. Additionally, the legislation would emphasize the importance of food safety and quality standards, ensuring citizens can access safe food products. Furthermore, the law could incorporate measures to support smallholder farmers, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices and resilience against environmental challenges. By promoting local food systems, Malaysia can reduce dependence on imported goods and enhance self-sufficiency. In conclusion, implementing a food security law in Malaysia is imperative for safeguarding the nation's food supply against current and future challenges. Such legislation would not only contribute to national stability but also ensure the health and well-being of the population, promoting a sustainable and secure food future.
