The use of biometric authentication has increased vastly in recent years. As security threats grow larger, various methods have been proposed to protect valuable sensitive information. Biometric technology appears as the best solution to safeguard data against unauthorised access and enhance the security of digital identities. Biometrics is a unique biological trait that is difficult to counterfeit, hard to steal, forgotten and lent. The uniqueness offered by biometrics becomes the optimal approach to identifying and authenticating users in various fields. This article discusses different types of biometric modalities, such as face, eyes and fingerprint and it also compares the differences between the biometric modalities. The article also describes the internal process of biometric authentication and further elaborates on the latest technology, such as machine learning and deep learning used in biometric authentication. This paper concludes that biometric authentication is secure and reliable in the digital world.
