Abstract

Emotionsrepresentedindramaseriesplayacrucialroleinshapingreaders'andviewers'experiencesandengagementwiththetext.Despiteextensivescholarlyattentiononemotionalportrayals,littleresearchexplicitlyaddresseshowspecificemotionalcontradictionswithincharactersinfluenceviewerperceptionsandresponses.ThroughthedramaseriesSquidGame(2021),amongthepopularKoreanTVdramas,Gi-hun’smindsetaffectinghisemotionalbehavioursattractsviewers,turningitintoadebatablecontextduetotheportrayalsoftraditionalgamesdrasticallymodifiedinideology.Tobridgethisresearchgap,thepresentanalysisinvestigatestherepresentationofmindsetinfluencingGi-hun’semotionalbehaviour,employingtheJames-Langetheoryofemotion,whichemphasisesthecharacter’semotions,actions,andthinkingstyle.Aqualitativeapproach,basedonsystematictextualanalysisandenhancedthroughdatatriangulationincorporatingscriptanalysis,directorialnotes,andaudiencereception,wasusedasthemethodofinvestigation.Thismethodenhancesmethodologicalcredibility,providingdeeperinsightsintoemotionalportrayals.
