Abstract

Stabilising quality employment relationships and increasing employee retention are among the top priorities for companies. Employers need to use strategic human resource management within their organisations to attract and retain talent. Excellent employers can enhance the competitive advantage of companies and serve as an important strategy for motivating and attracting talent. This study focuses on the retail industry in the Klang Valley to explore the relationship between compensation, career development, work-life balance, work environment, affective commitment, and employee retention. From both theoretical and practical standpoint, this research is essential. Theoretically, it contributes to the body of knowledge by introducing affective commitment as an intermediary variable in employee retention. From a practical perspective, HR managers and executives in retail businesses will find these findings insightful. The researchers’ recommended strategies include implementing competitive compensation packages, developing career advancement programs, and encouraging work-life balance initiatives for effective employee retention. Furthermore, it may be necessary to establish a conducive working environment through effective leadership and employee recognition programs, which can also enhance retention rates. These strategies can be used to ensure continuity by providing a stable workforce in retail organisations, thereby reducing turnover and achieving long-term success.
