Abstract

Peer-to-peer (P2P) financing is not only becoming well-known, but it has also developed to become an alternate financing option that brings the investors and borrowers together without having big financial institutions’ interferences. Malaysia was one of the first Asian countries to launch P2P lending platforms as an alternate financing option for Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and a platform for investors with vast investment options. As of today, Securities Commission Malaysia has licensed 11 P2P platforms, where 6 were approved in 2016 and another 5 three years later. The focus of P2P lending is SMEs and as of now individual borrowers are not permitted to advertise their projects in the platforms. However, investors can be an individual. P2P platforms provide a number of information on the projects they are looking funding for to allow investors to decide which project(s) to invest in. Some of the information include interest rates, the company's credit rating, the loan objective, the sum of the loan, the loan duration, and an overview of the company or business being financed. Though these platforms are accessible to all Malaysians regardless of their income levels, 10 out of 11 of the P2P platforms charge individual investors a subscription fee that ranges from RM5 to RM1000 (Nguyen et al., 2021). This study has investigated three independent variables influencing investor decisions in P2P lending platforms. Prior studies have focused more on the effects of personality traits on risk criterion, however, the current study has shown that defense mechanisms and emotional intelligence are also significant factors influencing investor decisions.
