Abstract

This study investigates extrinsic rewards influence employees' retention in their organisations. Psychological empowerment acts as a mediator in understanding the relationship between extrinsic rewards and intention to stay (employee retention). Relevant literatures and research findings have been presented to ascertain the relationship between extrinsic rewards, psychological empowerment with intention to stay. Convenience sampling approach was used to collect information from a sample of 101 full time and part time employees. Dataset was analysed using statistical tools such as IBM SPSS, Sobel test calculator and SmartPLS 4. Bootstrapping P-value and T-value were employed in hypotheses testing. The results of this study revealed extrinsic rewards, comprising of financial incentives, promotion opportunities, organisational prestige, relations with supervisor and relation with peers significantly influence the intention to stay. Furthermore, there is a favourable effect of psychological empowerment in the relationship between extrinsic rewards and employees’ intention to stay. Empirical evidence and insights in this research would be useful to stakeholders in the working sectors. The outcomes imply that employers should consider important extrinsic rewards factors such as promotion opportunities, relations with supervisor and organisational prestige whilst fabricating multiple strategies for retaining employees and leveraging them as a valuable resource to sustain organisational success.
