Abstract
Effective handover (HO) management is crucial for ensuring seamless connectivity in mobile communication networks. However, with the ever-increasing number of users, faster data rate demands, and diverse user requirements, managing HO has become a significant challenge. The deployment of small cells and millimeter wave (mmWave) networks has further added to this challenge by causing frequent HO occurrences. Thus, to optimize system performance, it is essential to have robust HO control parameters (HCPs) and decision algorithms in place. This research investigates the optimization of HCP, namely HO margin (HOM) and time-to-trigger (TTT), in a mobile heterogeneous network (HetNet) environment for various user equipment (UE) mobility speeds. In this study, we used different scenarios of HOM and TTT to evaluate the system performance using key performance indicators (KPIs) including reference signal received power (RSRP), radio link failures (RLF), HO ping-pong (HOPP), outage probability (OP), and HO probability (HOP). The study concludes that there is no global optimal value for HOM and TTT that satisfies all the KPIs. Due to the conflicting nature of these KPIs and their impact on the overall system performance, the use of auto-tuning algorithms, datadriven approaches, learning-based algorithm techniques, and hybrid heuristic approaches can aid in finding optimal HOM and TTT settings.
