Abstract

Continual technological innovation, especially educational technology in preschool education, has prompted an increase in new interaction characteristics across child-computer interaction (CCI) research. The problem of limited screen sizes as a display and input device has posed a design challenge that remains unanswered. Therefore, this study proposed a new child multi-touch screen interaction framework to serve as a comprehensive guideline in enabling preschool children users to accomplish their interaction goals effectively, efficiently, and with satisfaction by accommodating the context of use. The “child-friendly” research methods employed in this study encompassed a survey, usability testing, cognitive interviews, and automated data collection. It aimed to provide a preliminary insight and understanding of a research framework that can guide the investigation of usability testing (effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction) and technology acceptance model (ChildOriented TAM Model) within a single framework. The evaluation of efficiency was represented by completion time derived from the preschool children’s interaction with video puzzle. Next, the effectiveness of their multi-touch screen interaction was evaluated using the Catch-the-Stars application, which was developed based on Fitts’s Law to understand the touch accuracy completion rate derived from the child multitouch screen interaction. Furthermore, the Child-Oriented TAM Model was adapted to gather the preschool children’s feedback on their interaction satisfaction with multitouch screen.
