Abstract

Previously, people only accessed news from newspapers, magazines, and tabloids. Still, due to the pervasive use of the internet, it is easier for people to find the news today such as on the internet and social media platforms. As a consequence of the increase of information overload and a general lack of understanding of how the internet works among people, it is difficult to identify whether the information and news obtained is accurate or not. Studies on fake news have been focusing on a few general topics such as defining the term and mapping out the field of view of the phenomenon, investigating factors that influence why people believe and share fake news, and developing a fake news detection method. A growing number of studies examine a personality based on the Big Five model of personality (extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness) of those who are more susceptible to spreading false information. However, the results were inconsistent and need further investigation on what might be other related factors influencing the personalities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the mediating role of self-control in the relationship between personality traits and vulnerability to fake news, using Social Cognitive Theory, Five Factor Model of Personality and Self-Control Theory as the theoretical framework. This quantitative study has been conducted among social media users in Malaysia.
