Abstract

Phone-related fraud is becoming more prevalent in developing countries, particularly Malaysia. With the proliferation of mobile instant messaging development and adoption, a phishing attacker can deliver fake information and semi-relevant links to targeted Malaysian victims anonymously, particularly Malaysian Gen Z, resulting in victims losing large sums of money to phishers in investment and loan scams. Malaysian Gen Z's lack of awareness about phishing attacks, failure to detect phishing attacks, and exposure and involvement with digital technology make them vulnerable to phishing attacks and, as a result, financial losses. As a result, research questions were developed to determine whether individual prior knowledge, attitude, phishing message characteristics, phishing target characteristics, and attitude are able to explain instant messaging phishing susceptibility. The research objectives of this study are to examine if individual and message characteristics influence instant messaging phishing susceptibility among Malaysian Gen Z. The current study adopts the Theory of Deception as the underlying theory, exploring the effects of individual prior knowledge on instant messaging phishing susceptibility. However, one limitation of the Theory of Deception is its inability to recognise between a variety of indicators that could be used to detect fraud, that motivated the current study to integrate the Cyber-Routine Activities and the Heuristic-Systematic Model of Information Processing to address these shortcomings.
