Abstract

The thesis focuses on the development of novel systems that allow multiplexing of devices with overlapping optical spectra. The system utilizes arrayed of fiber delay lines (FDL) to passively generate sub-carrier signals and offers simultaneous plotting of multiple optical spectra. Accurate recovery of individual spectrum of multiplexed long period gratings spectra is experimentally demonstrated in a refractive index sensing application. The accuracy achieved is outstanding with a value of coefficient of determination, R2 between pristine and demultiplexed signals of at least 98.98%. The proposed technique offers economical and efficient system costs by removing the utilization of electro-optical modulators, in addition to system scalability. Next, the thesis proposes a novel optical sensing mechanism based on power imbalance using FDL in Mach-Zehnder configuration for realizing self-referenced measurement.
