Abstract

Education today is fast evolving with the inclusion of immersive and online technologies, making the teaching and learning processes more interesting and engaging. This study presents students’ perception of using Augmented Reality (AR) as an instructional tool for the understanding and learning of theories and basics of design. This study was conducted among 30 postgraduate students of Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University, and utilised a mixed mode research methodology, using both qualitative as well as quantitative methods of data collection. Content from the topic “Design Principles” was integrated into an AR app, which was underpinned by Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction, and presented to the students. Data was collected and triangulated from Pre/Post test (multiple choice questions), a survey questionnaire and student comments and feedback. The pre- and post test results showed statistically significant improvements in the performance of the students. Results from students' comments and feedback showed increased learning, motivation, engagement, interaction and perceived interest. These results provide strong encouragement for future learnings through such immersive technologies. A learning framework, MARLE (The Multimedia Augmented Reality Learning Environment) is presented as a guide to help educators understand and prepare engaging learning environments using emerging technologies like Augmented Reality.
