Abstract
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are extensively and frequently used in the campus to establish a protected communications network over public infrastructure like the Internet. However, many universities are still using outdated protocols despite their security flaws for reasons of cost and setup. These VPNs likewise lack effective Remote Access Control (RAC), which exposes the security of the local network at risk by allowing users to access any local device without authorization while establishing a VPN connection. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to examine various VPN protocols, establish VPNs with RAC and evaluate the performance of the VPNs. The MikroTik router and IKEv2 VPN are selected and tested as a solution for VPNs that require better security, stability, and speed as well as low cost and simple configuration.
