Abstract

Purpose of the study 1. Cybercriminals (i.e., phishers) have used mobile instant messaging to target vulnerable victims (Central Bank of Malaysia, 2017; MCMC, 2020; MCMC, 2021). 2. There was a significant increase in phishing cases in Malaysia, indicating that Malaysian citizens still have a low level of phishing awareness (Mohd & Mohd, 2021; Tan et al., 2020). 3. Victims lose a significant amount of money after disclosing personal information to scammers via WhatsApp messaging applications (Aiman, 2020; Yeoh, 2021; Bernama, 2022; The Sun Daily, 2022). ❖ The purpose of this study is to fill a research gap by conducting rigorous empirical research on the factors influencing the risk of phishing victimisation, specifically instant messaging phishing victimisation in Malaysia.
