Abstract

The growth of the ageing population throughout the countries has been aware in these few years. According to the United Nations (2020), there were 703 million people aged 65 years or over in the worldwide population in 2019, and it is expected to be twice over 1.5 billion in the year 2050. Most elderly wish to live independently in their own homes as they age (Matsumoto et al., 2016). Independent living is about the freedom elderly to choose their lifestyle by themselves, even if they do not do everything by themselves (Brisenden, 1986). Nevertheless, to live independently at home, the elderly must be able to perform essential daily activities. One of the essential daily activities for the elderly to achieve independent living is to go shopping at physical stores independently (Lawton and Brody, 1969). However, the elderly’s functional ability will decline with age, a critical obstacle to maintaining an independent lifestyle (Westerterp, 2003). The elderly with a low functional ability would face difficulties making grocery trips and maintaining access to food (Falahaty, 2015). Besides, they will also feel insecure and vulnerable as they are unable to obtain groceries. The elderly who are unable to maintain independent living will see a significant decline in their well-being.
