Abstract

The digital era has paved access to wireless telecommunication networks frequently with an immediate response just in time. Broadband wireless access (BWA) technologies as WiMAX are one of the technologies used to provide such services. Battery resource devices as mobile stations (MS) are battery assisted with limited life. Thus, the optimization of MS becomes an important problem. Hence, this paper proposed an Optimized TWIN Battery Resource Management Scheme. The key problem of battery management, such as the asynchronous connection between the uplink (UL) and the downlink (DL) traffics, which results in higher consumption and excessive delay with poor quality of service (QoS) was addressed to improve efficiency. The scheme presents a comprehensive survey and proposed an MS sleep mode algorithm that controls the sleep parameters based on traffic arrival rate using poison distribution. The proposed scheme employed a TWIN algorithm to relax down the UL traffics temporarily in the estimated buffer threshold (βt), when there are no traffic arrivals in the reverse direction of the DL traffic(s). In addition, the proposed scheme also derived an estimated function (EF) to determine an actual duration of time to temporarily store the UL data traffic without resulting in buffer overrun. The scheme employs the actual variant traffic characteristics aptly, with a well-designed threshold in other to minimize the unnecessary delay while aligning the traffics. Finally, an algorithmic procedure of DL connections that aids in adjusting the UL connection appropriately in order to align both traffics is presented. MATLAB simulator was used in evaluating the performance of the proposed TWIN scheme against the three existing schemes; the simulation results proved that the proposed scheme achieves superior performance with an optimized QoS.
