Abstract

Technology advancements in mobile devices have both its benefits and risks. With an estimated 20 million Malaysians using smartphones in 2020, the convenience of mobile payments, and security identification does not come without cybersecurity and privacy threats. Malaysian cyber laws have yet to be reviewed and the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 is currently under review. Personal data such as biometric information is absent in the current legislations and a new legislation/policy is needed to protect personal data in the event of a cybercrime. Purpose – The aim of this research is to review Malaysia’s cyber and privacy legislations and propose a holistic regulatory framework focused on filling the gaps in the current legislations. Hence, key cybersecurity personnel were interviewed to explore the cybersecurity challenges faced when dealing with personal data.
