Abstract

Recent studies show an upward trend of smoking among adolescents in Malaysia, either traditional cigarettes or smokeless tobacco. While smoking is an addictive behaviour, most adults initiated smoking during their adolescence and caused physical and emotional health problems in their later life. Therefore, it is crucial to have a practical smoking prevention framework to prevent young adolescents from initiating smoking. Past studies mainly focused on risk factors in smoking cessation and smoking initiation. Purpose – Hence, smoking prevention among non-smoking adolescents is targeted in this study by examining the determinants of smoking intention among adolescents. Three main aspects are observed, namely personality (knowledge), perceived environment (Parental supervision, peer influence & anti-smoking message exposure), and behaviour (academic performance & Substance use).
