Abstract

The middle class plays a role as the backbone of democracy in any national setting. Thanks to the overall ongoing erosion of welfare coupled with the increasing cost of livelihood; the M40 or middle class are currently confronting socio-economic vulnerability in Malaysia. If unattended, such vulnerability could slowly push the middle class into poverty making them the ‘new B40 (Bottom 40)’. Based on this background, this study attempts to develop a novel ‘competency index’ for the M40 and examine the effect of selected individual traits and competencies on vulnerability and sustainability of M40 households in Malaysia. If data supports the hypotheses empirically, the developed index identifying the specific traits and competencies could be upgraded by policies and programs, which in turn could reduce the socio-economic vulnerability and enhance the sustainability of M40 households in Malaysia. This study will execute a cross-sectional approach to assemble quantitative data from random individuals belonging to the M40 groups. The survey will be questionnaire based and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed for data analysis. It is expected that apart from extending the current literature, this study would facilitate in improving the socio-economic conditions and social engagement of the M40 middle class in Malaysia.
