Abstract

Commonly, Information Systems (IS) MBA coursework are based on evaluation of information systems in a selected organisation, review of hardware or software or a case study, or tech-talks and the like. Further to my continuous quest apply interesting methodology or approach that will change the mind set of IS students to think towards an innovator perspective to solve real problems. Design Thinking (DT) emerged as most suitable method for this purpose. This method was tested in two of MBA classes in consecutive semesters and found very effective in achieving course learning objective for the project. In addition, students understood the real world issues better and most importantly they are able to take the role of innovator in solving problems. We present one project which is on cybersecurity issues. Based on alarming cybersecurity incidents, organisations are unimaginably exposed to potential impacts beyond simple economic or opportunity loss. Since cybersecurity is directly under IT’s control, CIOs are urged to engage and prepare for data risks management (www.gartner.com). As such, managers are giving high priority to cybersecurity vulnerabilities and measures. In line with this, our project was conducted in a MBA class of 18 students. The students were grouped into four teams and given four questions in cybersecurity. They undertook DT method to device game changing solution. Popularised by the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school at Stanford), Design Thinking has been used in accelerator programs, assist creative leadership and innovation. In this MBA project, teams examined the IS problems in a five-stage approach—Empathy, Define, Ideation, Prototype and Testing. The innovation resulted from this project were
