Abstract

Mathematics aids in solving all science problems, thus it is the mother of all sciences. It is an important subject to Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Unfortunately, there is a situation where students anxious in learning mathematics, which in turn caused the poor performance in Mathematics. The new teaching and learning approach had been introduced with the aim to reduce students’ mathematics anxiety levels. The new approach is pedagogical agent (PA) approach in which animated pedagogical agents were incorporated into the teaching and learning of mathematics classroom. Anxiety treatment messages are provided to students by the agent in computer-based virtual learning environment. Before learning mathematics, students’ anxiety levels are determined with a test called Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS). Based on students’ anxiety levels, an appropriate amount of anxiety treatment messages will be given to them by the agent when they learn mathematics. The pedagogical agent played a role as a motivator which focuses on motivating students in learning mathematics and alleviating their mathematics anxiety. The anxiety treatment messages used in this study are emotional support and cognitive motivational messages to address affective and cognitive mathematics anxiety, respectively. There were decreased in students’ anxiety levels when the animated pedagogical agent was used in learning mathematics.
