Abstract

The objectives of this study are to design and develop a prototype with learning agent which will provide anxiety treatment messages based on students’ prior mathematics anxiety level, to examine the effects of anxiety treatment messages provided by incorporated learning agent in alleviating students’ mathematics anxiety, and to study the perceptions of students on the incorporation of proposed learning agent. This study adopted quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control with pre-test and post-test design. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected with mixedmethod approach. There were 73 undergraduate students participated in this study, 30 students in the control group and 43 students in the experimental group. The control group learnt with the conventional approach while the experimental group learnt with the learning agent approach. The prototype developed in this study was used for students’ learning in the learning agent approach. The prototype developed was incorporated with a learning agent which will provide an appropriate amount of anxiety treatment messages to students based on their prior mathematics anxiety levels (e.g. high, medium, and low) that were pre-determined with Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) in the pre-test. The learning agent played a role as a motivator which focuses on motivating students in learning mathematics and alleviating their mathematics anxiety. The anxiety treatment messages used in this study are emotional support and cognitive motivational messages to address affective and cognitive mathematics anxiety, respectively.
